Gelatin desserts are today considered retro and even low-class, but when industrial gelatin was first developed, gelatinous foods were the labor-intensive purview of the upper classes. Calves’ foot jelly and blanc mange were the height of fashion, but coexisted with terrines and head cheese. The discovery of granulated gelatin in 1845 was an accident - the inventor had been experimenting with r...

Because of the historic stigma that surrounds physical disabilities, a misinformed narrative that disabled people did not affect their communities, belongings, and environments has persisted. Consequently, disabled people’s agency tends to be limited, if not erased, from historic records. Material culture related to disability, however, helps restore their histories and presence. This talk exam...

Esther Nisenthal Krinitz was 15 in 1942 when Nazis ordered the Jews of her Polish village to report to a nearby train station. She chose to flee with her 13-year-old sister, never to see the rest of her family again. Decades later, determined to show her daughters the family she had lost, Esther created a series of 36 exquisite works of fabric collage and embroidery-a legacy of love, grief and ...
Sewn in America Exhibition Trailer
Переглядів 8183 місяці тому
Sewn objects surround us. They clothe us from birth, cover our bodies day and night, and furnish our living spaces. For over 40,000 years humans have sewn by hand (and for a mere 180, by machine as well). Until recently, every woman and many men knew how to sew for utilitarian and often decorative purposes. Knowing a variety of techniques and stitches, and which to use for a given task, was key...
Tuesday Talk 02.2024: Form and Function - American-Made Red Earthenware at the DAR Museum
Переглядів 675 місяців тому
The clay needed to make common red earthenware, also called redware, was found in abundance throughout the colonies in early America. It gets its name from the iron oxide in the clay that gives the pottery its signature red color. Like stoneware, red earthenware was an important material in early American homes from the 1700s to the 1870s. The DAR Museum acquired its first piece of redware in 1...

That is a bust of George Washington. He typically resides on the third floor of Memorial Continental Hall between the Virginia Room and the Banquet Hall. When restoration in that corner of the building is done, he'll get cleaned up and put back in his proper place!

Thanks for the effort. Films like that I find very interesting and I learned something new. Unfortunately the picture-in-picture feature was obscuring a lot of relevant detail and thus it was quite annoying and defeating the purpose of the video. The framing of most furniture was also in a way that the feet or other elements were out of frame. Surely this was avoidable. Details referred to in the commentary were completely invisible (like the rosewood plywood) or out of frame. I hope you can remedy those unfortunate, but serious flaws with a new edit of the material. I think it is well worth the effort to do so because the commentary and research were all flawless. I hope i am not to harsh.

The music is the 1st movement, of 2 from Beethoven (1770-1827) Piano Sonata #32 in C minor Op 111. It sounds like Peter Serkin from 1970. It seems like the sequel should use the second movt. Arieta, a wonderful set of variations,

What a biased and overly critical video of what women liked to wear and look like in the past. And to be hone, I would rather be surrounded by ladies wearing Victorian bustle gowns than the trash we see today. Nudity everywhere, nasty leggings, cleavage galore, obesity to the max. We truly live in a disgusting, morally depraved sinister world today. And women like you are the lowest of the low, pure tar. I would rather live in a Victorian house, with Victorian furniture instead of the concrete "modern" boxes that are used nowadays with cheap metal and cardboard furniture.

Women's fashion: jfoertjsrjgsojeggpojapgsg EVERYTHING. YOU CAN WEAR EVERYTHING. Men's fashion: How big you want your lapels to be, brah? It is a shame so much of history is like this. Thankfully, no as much anymore. The cultural revolution really improved things.
